I have great aspiration in aviation, that's why I chose Aviation Studies in HKU SPACE Community College in 2012. Throughout the two years, other than the knowledge taught by lecturer, the college also provides us opportunity to work at the airport or with different airlines. Luckily, I had a chance to work at Jardines Aviation Service as a ground staff. Although I only worked for a short period, I really enjoyed working in the field that I love. I am currently working in the Customer Service Department at Cathay Pacific. The time here is wonderful. Hope that aviation-lovers can also find themselves from this programme.

  • 2014 Delegate, Singapore Aviation (Airshow) Study Trip

After I graduated from the Higher Diploma in Aviation Studies (HDAS) at HKU SPACE CC, I have been working as a Load Control Officer with the Hong Kong Airport Services Ltd., distributing loads of the aircraft according to safety, regulations and gravity parameters, also calculating aircraft weight and balance, and then preparing loading instructions and load sheets for ramp staff and cockpit crew. The work looks difficult, but I am simply performing what I learnt through HDAS. Furthermore, after I joined the work force, I missed my student life so much at HKU SPACE CC.

Being a pilot has been my goal since I was a secondary school student. I joined the pilot stream of Aviation Studies in HKU SPACE CC through the NSS Applied Learning Course in 2011 and had 2 years of exciting studies with friendly classmates, professional teacher and instructors. We had theory lessons in classroom, flight simulation lessons in flight simulation laboratory, and site visits in Hong Kong and Mainland, China. With the support of my family, I went to Brisbane, Australia with my instructor after the end of the course, and finished the first 10 hours of flight training in my life. The days I studied at HKU SPACE CC were the happiest moment in my school life.

After the HKDSE exam, I considered about my study pathway as there was no university in Hong Kong providing an aviation related bachelor degree. I struggled about choosing a non- aviation related degree or going back to HKU SPACE CC for the HDAS as I really wanted to discover more about aviation. Later, my failure in HKDSE helped me to make the conclusion of going back to HKU SPACE CC.

The studies of HDAS covers Flight Operations and Aviation Management, while we learned about the usual operation procedures in the industry, we also learn about the management theories which support the operations. The skills and knowledge we learnt are taught by warmhearted lecturers who use their holidays to get to college and have lectures with us. The lecturers are all from the industry, they have the latest information and skills of the industry, which help us to stick close to the aviation world. Moreover, the programme team staff always tries their best to help us to feel the reality of the industry and find internship programmes to work in leading aviation companies. Some of my classmates worked at Heliservices, Metrojet, Hong Kong Airport Ground Services Ltd. (HAGSL), Cathay Pacific Cargo Ltd.(CPCL) and I went to Jardine Airport Services Ltd.(JASL) to work as a Passenger Services Agent for a summer internship where I recognised my weaknesses and it reminded me to keep reaching for my goal.

Apart of internship programmes, the programme team also organizes lots of career talks and study trips for us. We had career talks with Cathay Pacific Cadet Pilot Programme and Flight Attendant interviews every year, and I joined the study trips to Singapore, South Korea and Zhuhai in my 2 years of Higher Diploma life. Going to Singapore for the Singapore Airshow 2014 boarded our horizons of knowing the latest aviation technologies and training programmes for the new aviators; knowing new friends from the Asia Pacific Aviation Education and Training Symposium (AAETS) in South Korea help us to enhance our links with other professional aviators around the world; visiting the Zhuhai Airport helped us to understand more about the General Aviation Development in Mainland, China. Each trip helped us to extend our knowledge in different areas of aviation, and we always can use what we knowledge we gained from our trips and link to our studies.

Time flies, and I have graduated from the programme for almost a year, but I still remember what I learnt from my lectures in HKU SPACE CC, and use it in my daily job. I still maintain contact with my lecturers, programme team staff and even the friends I knew from the study trips! HDAS gives me a lot of chances to get in touch with the industry, and provides us lots of resources which help us to join the industry. I appreciate meeting people from the programme as they always give us advice and support we need, no matter whether it’s studying or working.

If you want to take aviation as your study pathway, come and join us! You will meet lots of classmates with similar goals, our lecturers and the programme team will always help you in achieving your goal in the aviation world. For me, even though, I have already joined a good company, I will continue learning and have further education in Australia for my degree.

I hope someday I can be the one in the cockpit, and bring you all to fly up high!

Do you like aviation? Would you like to learn more about it? Would you like to join the industry? Higher Diploma in Aviation Studies programme is definitely your choice. In this course, what you can get is not just knowledge on handouts but also a valuable and unforgettable experience that actually bring you into the aviation industry.

During the two years’ time, I had been to several airshows and overseas trips. Unlike those trips in secondary schools, we are now treated as one of the professional in these major events. We would be able to chat with experts from famous companies (e.g. Boeing, Airbus) as well as share their design and ideas of their company which make you feel that you are a member of the aviation family. In the Asia Pacific Aviation Education and Training Symposium, we got a chance to listen to a sharing giving by an Emirates’ manager who told us about his career path and daily responsibilities. These experiences helped me to develop confidence in the business world and understand the operations of aviation industry which is very useful for my future career.

Moreover, one of the big differences between this course to others is that many lecturers and tutors have worked m the industry. They would share their daily job experiences that enrich the lessons and make the classes more practical and useful. We also have a lot of opportunities to join many different internship provided by industry like Cathay Pacific Services Limited, Metrojet and Heliservices.

For those who want to be a pilot or flight attendant, the college provides different training workshops and professional advice. We are also given the chance to participate in activities like the Annual Aircraft Crash Exercise held by the Airport Authority, which gives us a bigger picture of the aviation in different aspects.

If you like aviation and would like to join the industry, it should be you choice. What you can get here would be more than you expected. Now, I am studying in a BBA programme at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, majoring in International Shipping and Transport Logistics and continue to strive for my dream to be a professional in the aviation industry. Hope to see you in the coming future!

This programme provides both practical skills and knowledge about the aviation industry in Hong Kong and around the world, which has helped us to build a good foundation to develop our career path in the aviation field. For instance, this programme offered us several field trips that could broaden our knowledge and experience on how companies operate their business. Furthermore, sharing sessions by pilots and flight attendants allow us to have a deeper understanding of their job. Their experiences were also useful for us to enter the aviation industry in the future. In addition, internship programmes were offered to us as well, which provided a valuable opportunity for us to know more about the industry in Hong Kong and better equip ourselves to get ready to enter into the industry.

Not only do we have internship opportunities offered by the programme, the lecturers of each course have worked in the industry in Hong Kong. They are experienced and also have rich knowledge in different aspects of aviation industry which is useful to students whom are interested in joining the industry in the future.

The higher diploma programme not only provided practical skills and knowledge to me, but also gave me a chance to further my study in university. HKU SPACE CC is rich in resources and willing to provide all possible assistance to students, including me, to pursue a degree after graduation.

Although my current study is not related to aviation, I would still want to work in the aviation industry in the future. If you are interested in aviation or willing to develop your career path in aviation industry, please do not hesitate and apply for this programme.

It was a tough time when I found out that I had failed to get a place in a local university two years ago. It was HKU SPACE CC that gave me the opportunity to keep learning and better equip myself for the future. Aviation had long been my interest but it turned into my study major, enabling me to pursue my dream in the future.

Apart from regular lectures on aviation-related knowledge, the College programme team offered us various internships and part-time working opportunities, as well as a lot of relevant activities throughout the two-year programme. Being able to really work in the field helped consolidate my own knowledge and exposed me to some new things that couldn’t be learnt in the classroom. I am really happy that I had these precious practical experiences. I believe these real-life working experiences did help me a lot in gaining admission to university two years later, and will definitely help me in the future when developing my career path.

A lot of people see the study of sub-degree programmes as a waste of time and money, but I think, on the contrary, these two-years enabled me to think about what I wanted my ideal future to be, and turn it into reality. The time in the College is not only about academic achievement but about whole-person development as well. So please don’t close yourself off from society. Seize the opportunity and enrich your life in CC!

If you want to pursue your dream in aviation, it is not a bad idea to study in this programme. You will meet a lot of lecturers with strong experience and willing to share all they know with the students, so you will get a lot from studying here. I have kept a good relationship with some lecturers, even though I have already graduated from HKU SPACE CC. We sometimes have a dinner and chat about everything.

The two years studying in the Aviation Studies programme were the most enjoyable moments ever, as you are studying something that you like. I have met a lot of friends with the same interests and share the same passion, so you will not be alone, if you are interested in aviation.

There are many activities in this programme. I have joined two summer study trips to Beijing, Tianjin and Chengdu. Thus, I could visit an Airbus factory, flight training school and an aircraft maintenance hangar. You can learn a lot from the trip, such as the actual operation, working culture, and the aircraft structure in different countries. The lecturers will go with us, so we can ask them some technical or industry related questions, and you can learn a lot in those few days. We will have some local visits as well, like the HAECO and Heliservices visit. Every student will have a chance to visit those places to learn more about the industry.

Some of you may want to be a pilot, flight attendant, etc. Thus, the College will have some workshops or seminars for the students. I have joined a two-day workshop of pilot interview skills. Due to the limited time, you cannot learn lots of knowledge about this, but you will know the most important criteria to be a pilot, so it gives you a chance to think about how to improve yourself to achieve your dream. You will also have a chance to fly the simulator with a pilot instructor, so you can know what it is like to fly.

This course can help you a lot in preparing to join the aviation industry. How much you can get from this depends on how much you want to get. You will have a lot of chances here, so treasure every chance that you can get - this is the most important thing that I have learned here. I am now studying a BBA programme at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, majoring in International Shipping and Transport Logistics. I am still working hard on pursuing my dream.

Dream Big! Fly High!
