Being one of the students that came from a secondary school using Chinese as a medium of instruction, I faced some learning difficulties initially because my English standard was relatively lower than others. However, the problem became my motivation for improving my English; for example, I tried hard to look up the meaning of all English terms before my lessons. When I still did not understand those scientific jargons, I could ask the lecturers for help. I believe that genius is one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration. Finally, my hard work paid off and I got eight offers from six UGC-funded local universities. Everyone may have his or her own weaknesses, but success is waiting for those who can persist in their studies. Because of failure in public examination, I had low self-confidence and no hope towards my future. However, I experienced a turning point here. I started to study hard with passion, to become a committee member and speak publicly, and to believe in my ability. Definitely, I experienced moments of sorrow and fear. However, when you work hard, focus on the goals and keep moving on with perseverance, what you receive is far more than what you expect. I cherish memories of studying here. Translation is not an easy task at all since it requires everlasting efforts to nurture one’s language proficiency and try out different translation approaches. Fortunately, all the translation teachers here are professional and patient in teaching students different aspects of translation. I’ve really gained a lot from this programme. I can tell you that a two-year study experience at HKU SPACE Community College is valuable and fruitful. Studying is not independent work and I made lots of friends here including classmates and lecturers. I always met lecturers who were willing to stay behind to teach us. Last summer I joined an internship programme at Hongkong International Terminals (HIT). Together with students from different universities and colleges we analysed the relationship between the velocity of a crane and the lifetime of components. I was very glad that I could make use of my study to apply my knowledge at work and that I could broaden my horizon.
