Programme Objectives

The programme aims to: 

1) enhance the critical thinking skills, presentation skills, service-oriented attitude and confidence of students by improving their language proficiency; 

2) familiarize students with the general understanding of English usage in a wide variety of key industries like tourism and hospitality, aviation, healthcare, interior design, visual communications, culture, entertainment and media as well as commercial business in order to strengthen students’ academic potentials and broaden their horizons;

3) prepare S4-5 students for post-secondary studies and / or on the-job training.

Secondary 4 or secondary 5 students in the 2018/19 school year.

Duration

The 150-hour programme will commence in mid-September 2018 and last for 18 months.

Class Duration

3 hours on Saturdays

Tentative Programme Schedule

Module 1: September 2018 to December 2018

Module 2: January 2019 to April 2019

Module 3: July 2019 to January 2020

Provision of on-site Delivery:  If an individual school has sufficient students to form their own class, schedules can be customised to avoid clashes with school activities.

Assessment Framework

Module 1 and Module 2 adopt the same assessment framework:

  • Continuous Assessment (writing and vocabulary): 30%
  • End-of-Module Assessment (reading, grammar, listening and oral): 60%
  • Participation: 10%

Module 3:

  • Continuous Assessment (reading, vocabulary, grammar and listening): 40%
  • End-of-Module Assessment (writing and oral): 50%
  • Participation: 10%


Progression Requirements

  • Passing mark for each module: 50%
  • Attendance requirement: 80%


Reassessment

Reassessment will be arranged for absentees who are able to present relevant documentation.

Students whose final mark falls below 50% will be given one opportunity to do reassessment. The reassessment will be a 2-hour test consisting four sections: reading, vocabulary, grammar and writing.

2: Vocational English II: Workplace Communication

3:  Vocational English III: Business Communication

Intended Learning Outcomes of the Programme

On completion of the programme, students should be able to:

1.   express ideas clearly using different modes of communication with practical English;

2.   handle daily routine and operational needs with the right vocabulary and manners in vocational settings;

3.   practice different business genres of writing and spoken communications;

4.   apply refined listening, spoken and written skills and techniques in communicating with clients and colleagues at work in industry-specific scenarios.

Award

Students who complete module 1 will be awarded a Certificate for Module (Vocational English I: Everyday Communication).

Students who complete module 2 will be awarded a Certificate for Module (Vocational English II: Workplace Communication).

Students who complete module 3 will be awarded a Certificate for Module (Vocational English III: Business Communication).

Successful completion of the three modules leads to a Certificate in Vocational English awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE.  

Entry requirements

Applicants shall be Secondary 4 or Secondary 5 students in the 2018/19 school year.

(Priority will be given to students from the 50 participating schools selected by the Education Bureau.)

Fees

HK$ 10,000 per student for the 3-module programme.

  • Module 1: HK $2,500
  • Module 2: HK$ 2,500
  • Module 3: HK$ 5,000
