Jonathan Siu 2015 Higher Diploma in Architectural Studies, HKU SPACE Community College

Through Architecture, I want to express myself in a more interesting way. Architecture has always been a self-motivated discipline that demands great determination. Thus, it is undoubtedly a lifelong challenge to learn Architecture. While I found myself disappointed with the JUPAS result, HKU SPACE CC offered me an opportunity to rediscover my journey. The Higher Diploma in Architectural Studies is a well-organized programme that provides all-round training for its students. It encourages the balance between 3-D designs and design resolutions, the exploration in historic and cultural contexts, as well as applications in the local practical field. In addition, witnessing is always one of the best ways to understand Architecture. A field trip will be arranged every year for students to interact with award-winning architects. In this way, students will also develop and sharpen their judgment while appreciating an array of masterpieces. You will surely learn the attitude required to pursue a career in this competitive field by participating in the numerous job placements posted by the department every summer. 李嘉輝文學副學士（語言及人文學科）-人文學科

相信大部分港大附屬學院的同學都有一個共同目標：升讀大學。作為本校的畢業生，我認為在這裡的學習是絕對有助同學達成以上目標。不論同學打算向哪一個方向發展，學院眾多的學系或主修都能給予同學各種機會，而課程的設計以及講師的水平令同學在短時間內融入與中學截然不同的學習環境。以我的主修人文學科 (Humanities) 為例，很多人也許覺得此科出路不多，這其實是一種誤解。人文學科包含了文、史、哲三大學術範疇，對於有志在非聯招報讀這三個科系的同學自然是首選。但即使同學打算同時報讀其他學科，如文化科系、創意媒體，甚至是商科，它也會帶給你意想不到的「收穫」。因為數個核心科目在傳授紮實的理論及知識的同時亦著重訓練同學的邏輯及批判性思考。這種獨立思考的能力令同學在非聯招收生中最重要的面試環節有一定的優勢。我在畢業時便獲數個迥然不同的學系所錄取，有中大的哲學系、浸大的宗哲系，也有屬於商科的城大市場營銷學系。我衷心感激港大附屬學院在過去兩年間對我的幫助，令我找到自己的出路。 View Details

由一個「失敗」的理科人轉化成一個「成功」的文科人，過程絕不容易；由不獲任何大學取錄到取得多間大學取錄，苦盡甘來的感覺很奇妙。現在我就讀香港中文大學歷史系三年級，有機會感受大學的文化，「上莊」、「DEM BEAT」、玩「院慶」等，這些改變都是有賴港大附屬學院 (CC) 對我的幫助。當時文憑試慘遭滑鐵盧，我十分迷惘，之後毅然報讀CC的文學副學士課程。除文科的課程外，我還有機會學習其他範疇的知識，例如社會學、心理學、語言學等。此外，過程中身邊有着一班「戰友」，大家緊密合作解決難題，這些磨練、經驗，都十分難能可貴，在大學甚至將來投身社會亦能運用。很肯定的說，在CC，付出和收穫是成正比的，非常感謝講師對我的栽培，同學對我的幫助，使我更珍惜身邊的一切，助我全面地成長。最後想向各位分享我的座右銘：「忘記背後，努力面前，向着標竿直跑」，希望大家一起努力向着目標邁進！ View Details

考完文憑試，初入港大附屬學院時是抱著僥倖一試的心態，姑且在這裡讀一讀自己有興趣的科目試試吧。因為從中學起就喜歡中文、文學，見學院又有與中文相關的科目，就報讀CC了。初入學時甚麼都不懂，我也不是很會說話的人，在學校裡就只有兩、三個較為熟悉的朋友。儘管如此，中文組的老師都很樂意解答我關於升學或就業的問題，且有很好的建議給我。尤其二年級報non-JUPAS時需要推薦信，講師都願意替我撰寫，真的十分感激！另外做報告及論文遇到難題，講師也樂意抽時間教導我們，自己從中獲得了不少知識。二年級上過的專業課為我之後上大學讀中文系打好了基礎，不論是現代抑或古典文學，都讓我更了解這些學科，也更喜歡中文了，故此後來報大學也選擇了中文系。如今在大學也偶爾會想起在學院與朋友一起奮鬥的日子，那時雖頗有壓力，但是有清晰目標，雖然辛苦，也是快樂的。 View Details

從第一屆的文憑試到第二屆的自修，覺得自己由一個地獄走出來，那時我覺得努力定有回報，然而世事往往不如人意，最後還是要踏上副學士的路途。兩年前以為等待自己的是另一個地獄；後來才明白多得這趟地獄之旅，自己才能蛻變成今天的我。現在對這裡仍有點不捨。在最初選擇孤身上路，不與人交流，只靠自己，與別人合作稍有不合就把問題歸咎他人，心高氣傲，剛愎自用。這是我的寫照，同時也是大部份人的寫照。進入第二年選擇了主科後，遇到一群志同道合的好朋友，一起奮鬥。感覺不再是孤單一人，而是和朋友一起並肩作戰。中文組的老師對我們也呵護備至，不但會回答習作及課堂上的問題，也會為我們升學提供幫助。不知不覺間已喜歡上這裡的學習環境，對學院依依不捨。我在這裡建議大家要以最適合自己的方式讀書。不需強迫自己跟隨別人的步伐，而是努力尋找一班志同道合的朋友，修讀自己感興趣的科目，一起上課，合作做project，這就是我在太空的成功之道。 View Details

因中學時期不曾修讀中國文學科，在副學士課程中毅然選擇中國語言、文學及文化為主修，起初猶恐心有餘而力不足，然修讀相關課程後卻發現當中趣味盎然，此後學習自然轄然開朗。興趣是最好的老師，所謂「知之者不如好之者，好之者不如樂之者」，了解自己的興趣所在，寓學於樂，自能遊刃有餘。副學士也許並非是同學心中所想的「大道」，但條條大路通羅馬，副學士亦不失為寶貴的學習及人生經驗。副學士學科選擇繁多，除書本知識，亦有培養思維、人文素養的選修科供同學選擇。此外，老師的良言忠告，同學間的砥礪勸勉亦是另一珍貴回憶、收穫，日後回想，有若三月春風，暖人心扉。有謂「學之廣在於不倦，不倦在於固志」，同學若能清楚目標、興趣所在，學習也就自然得心應手。 View Details

2 years of adventure at HKU SPACE CC was rewarding and terrific! One’s triumph only comes after acquiring a positive attitude, staying conscious and having good work ethic. Teachers at HKU SPACE CC are the lighthouse in the middle of the sea, they guide us, students, to those mentioned qualities with heart and passion; whenever we have questions on studies, we are given sincere help and useful methods to deal with them. On top of that, we are driven to achieve and explore our potentials. The Division of English offers a wide range of activities to students so they can learn and practice their English outside the classroom. The annual English Singing Contest and Speech Competition are just two examples. Students who are either afraid of public speaking or only need the stage to shine are given a chance to explore their potentials. It is not solely about the result, but the process of overcoming hurdles, and knowing what our strongest suits are. Ng Wing To, Richard 2012-14 Associate of Arts (Languages and Humanities) in Japanese Studies

Studying at the Community College was originally an inconvenient experience, due to the long-lasting misunderstandings of the public. Yet, for me, the education provided by the AA Japanese Studies programme at HKU SPACE CC was as good as that by most, if not all undergraduate programmes. Japanese Studies programme at HKU SPACE CC provided me with not only intensive Japanese language training, which made me well-prepared for the one-year exchange programme at The University of Tokyo during my undergraduate studies, but also courses that helped me build up a strong theoretical foundation to deal with the rigorous academic courses at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Although I have shifted my focus on Japanese Studies to Sinophone Studies and critical theories after entering the university, the classes I attended at HKU SPACE CC did enable me to ponder on my studies in one more dimension. I owe an arigato gozaimasu (thank you in Japanese) to my Japanese teachers, and all the instructors who enlightened me when I was still struggling with a university degree. I cannot say they are better than those at the university, but they are good enough to help you start your academic journey. View Details

I remember I started studying at HKU SPACE Community College with a sense of inferiority, feeling incapable of advancing into a higher degree. However, with the dedicated and supportive teaching from professional teachers at the college, I realized I could become a better person if I endeavoured myself to be. Our lecturers didn't treat us as losers but as potential warriors ready to fight our way to a brighter future. All that I learnt from the college enabled me to enter a local university as a senior year student and graduated with First-class Honours. Now that I am studying a Postgraduate Diploma in Education to equip myself to become a teacher, which has always been my dream job, I do think that my two-year study at the college was an indispensable part of what made me a better and more mature person today. It has been one of the most fruitful experiences of my life. A detour path won't make us less competitive. It's the experience we gain that counts - failures make us grow, setbacks make us stronger, and learning to deal with them can make a huge difference. View Details

HKU SPACE CC has enabled me to achieve my goal of entering university, because teachers in HKU SPACE CC were willing to help with my learning, and SDCS equipped me with important knowledge of non-JUPAS applications. When I came across any questions about lecture concepts, I asked my teachers after lessons or by email. Their willingness to address my queries helped me to understand the concepts more clearly and to digest such concepts more effectively. They also offered me clear guidance on developing my assignments in the right direction. Regarding further studies activities organised by SDCS, I benefited from an information session on ‘local study opportunities’, a sharing session on ‘successful university applications’, workshops on ‘choosing a university and writing a personal statement’ and ‘effective interview skills for university applications and mock interviews for university admission’, as well as an briefing session by an individual university/programme. I learnt important strategies for non-JUPAS applications and related interview skills after participating in these activities. Moreover, during individual counselling, counsellors solved my questions about university applications, and taught me stress management skills. 記得一位老師說過：「走一條較遠的路不一定是壞的。」的而且確，入讀副學士不能保證你一定升讀大學，但這是一個機會。在港大附屬學院這兩年，我讀過了一些中國語言文學的課程，例如經典文獻選讀、文學評論和語法學等等，打好了基礎，彷彿增添了一份文人的氣息。感謝附屬學院的每位講師，他們有着滿腔熱誠和深厚的文學根柢、知識，給予學生優質的教學。他們會耐心地回答你關於功課和升學的提問。所以我可以保證，中文組裡的都是數一數二的好老師。除了講師，我亦想感謝一班有着共同目標的同學和朋友，我很慶幸能遇到一班投契的朋友進而建立一段長久的友誼。我亦不時懷念當時一起溫習、互相幫忙和為目標而奮鬥的時光。現在我就讀於城市大學中文系三年級。我慶幸當年選擇了就讀港大附屬學院而非重讀。希望大家亦有一段美好的時光，共勉之。 View Details

當初跟不少人一樣，只想靠「太空」升上大學；但卻有些意外的際遇。十分慶幸遇上一班好同學、好老師，難忘一起add drop，做group project 的日子。離開了「太空」，偶爾會有師生聚會，彼此分享近況，老師也很關心作為畢業生的我們。唯一後悔的是沒怎參加課外活動。眼見朋友的人際關係因而變好，的確十分羨慕。升上大學，也許因為兩年時間太短，其實也沒太多人會做齊上大學的五件事。這番話或者有些叫人難以置信，不少師兄姐也認為在「太空」的生活比較愉快，所以在努力之際，也好好珍惜在「太空」的日子吧。 View Details

也許「太空」每個專業的學生比大學少而且也較參差，所以「太空」的講師在課程編排上因應學生水平調整，大學則著重自主學習，比較害羞的學生如我，其實更適合在「太空」上課。「太空」和大學最大分別在於有種成長的感覺，有些人說「太空」只是一個浪費的過程，但上到大學後，會發現「太空」所學如寫論文、小組研習等，經歷過「太空」之後基礎會十分扎實，在大學課程上毫不吃力。所以，在「太空」學習也是成長過程，不必妄自菲薄，別將此當成人生最後的失敗點。 View Details

很高興能在此分享我在港大附屬學院的學習感言！相信現時大家眼裡只有一個念頭 - 爆GPA入大學。但我確信你們最後得到的絕不僅是大學學位。我認為在學院學習的最重要的原則是不卑不亢。不卑：不要因同學們都上大學，便覺得自己是失敗者。失去自信心，學習事倍功半；不亢：汗水是必須付出的，不要奢望小聰明能助你平步青雲。調整個人心態後，便應嘗試適應大專學習模式：要自覺學習，以及與人合作，箇中培養到的處事態度，無論對入大學後或出社會做事都有莫大裨益。慶幸的是，過去兩年我並非孤軍作戰。我不但認識了能並肩作戰的戰友，所接觸的老師也認真教學，堪比大學的講師。對我而言，港大附屬學院不只是我入大學的踏腳石，更是學習歷程中珍貴的兩年。盼大家能在港大附屬學院找到目標，邁向前路。共勉！ View Details

I studied General English III, English for Academic and Professional Purposes I & II and English for Arts and Humanities. These are core English courses in studying the associate degree programme. I found these courses really helpful to my further studies in the Arts field. These courses have allowed me to establish a solid foundation in English, and gradually guided me to write academically. Apart from English proficiency, I gained the skill of critical thinking and data analysis, which has equipped me with the key to open the world of academic studies, so that I could understand the theories proposed by other scholars in their paper and then come up with my own ideas. I had many opportunities to execute what I learnt in class through presentations and projects. The class activities were something I enjoyed too, as I could exchange opinions with classmates. Moreover, the teachers encouraged my learning. They provided valuable advice when I came across any problem. All in all, these English courses boosted my academic writing skills in many aspects. Studying in college can be stressful and miserable. I am glad that I asked myself 3 questions during the past two years. The first question was “What are you going to focus on?” After being defeated in the public examinations, most students chose to focus on the fact that they were not good at studying. That was why they often felt frustrated. Instead, I looked at it from a completely different perspective. I thought of the experience as a way to grow and learn, which let me stay positive and motivated. The next question was “What meanings do you ascribe to things?”, the defeat in public examination meant nothing but a time for me to change. My school life in HKU SPACE CC was fruitful yet challenging. Here are the five key elements that summarize the 2 years of Archi-life. First, team work is quintessential to every aspect of my learning experience, from learning to cooperate and communicate, to achieving a goal that could not otherwise be achieved, to sharing ideas and learning from each other. This makes you and the team/ classmate grow together. Second, active learning is part of architecture. While an engineer knows everything about something, an architect ought to know something about everything. This is very different from secondary school life, where instead of being told what you must do, you must decide on your scope of study and decide on your design direction where there is no right and wrong. For example, in one of the projects we participated - Together We Build, we were given an objective to design a furniture for an elderly center. To build something, you must understand a lot of different aspects, including the end user, the site and the surrounding environment. You must also decide how to conduct your own survey. You need to constantly put yourself into the end users’ shoes to build a good design that suit their lifestyle. Third, a “can-do” mentality is crucial to an architectural student. You should never give up before you try, because then you would never know what you are capable of. One of the projects we built was a 1-to-1 scale model, and we chose an aquaponics system, which turned out to be incredibly complex, extremely difficult. But more importantly, doable. Which brings me to the fourth point. Passion is what helps you through the day, gives you the “can-do” mentality, and helps you knock down obstacles one by one. Architectural students are those who keep improving the design within the time given—although there will be obstacles. Having passion is what drives one to overcome them, making us stronger and more persistent, and helping us overcome our failures. Fifth, I’m also glad to have such a great team of tutors and mentors here. They are very experienced in their fields, some are even still working in the field and therefore are knowledgeable with up-to-date practical suggestions, know-how and advice. They are all willing to and patient to share their thoughts and experiences, which has sped up my learning curve. Architectural study is really fun, because it is not just about schooling; it is a mindset, a way of thinking and a key for us to open up our curiosity to everyday life. View Details

My time in HDARCH was an essential journey of self-exploration and becoming more mature as a designer. The school has helped to shape my passion for design research, giving me space to concentrate on themes I feel that matter to the World and my community. One of the wonders of architecture is that the field is always changing and constantly demands innovation. Our projects often demanded us rethink the World through an in-depth investigation of different scales, from urban to human ergonomics. The course will push and refine your creative thinking on every problem. In Pre-Covid times, we also got to do projects in different parts of the World. One of my most significant experiences in designing and building a school in Cambodia during our summer holiday. Where we experienced a vigorous two-week design process from start to finish. I learned the attention to detail and how architecture is a group process. Another notable aspect of this course is the inclusion of a diverse age group of students in the later years. Incorporating different qualities and work experiences with designers is a valuable lesson to learn. Sometimes problems in the group and the project can seem overwhelming, and things become uncertain about constantly brainstorming. Part of being a designer is seeing how you continue to solve these problems. Looking for quick and strategic decision-making is vital in the field of architecture. Each class offers its own perspective on your design process and a unique opportunity to refine your proposal. I learned a valuable lesson of integrating different practices into my design to make my project rich. Everything is a learning tool for innovation.
